Hi guys, I have a question for those that finally landed in Canada.
How do you transfer the money you have in your bank in the US to an account in Canada ? What services did you use ?

Thank you!

I kept a US account. I have a Canadian account. When I need to move money from my US account, it is wired to my Canadian bank for a $17 fee. I watch the currency exchange and try to pick the most optimal times when the USD is higher. The morning of the transfer the US bank quotes you their specific exchange rate. It was a bit of a pain to set it up to wire internationally, but once the paperwork was done it's been simple.

Hate to sound like I am complaining, but my Background Check has been in process for a week now. I am not complaining, just concerned. Would reallllllly love to see that PR status before Xmas!

And my neurotic habit of checking my status online has only gotten worse since Background Check started. I'm driving myself nuts!

pls someone help me with this.
I read in the application instructions that upon completing form IM0008 and IM1344, a barvode will be generated. How come our forms didnt have any barcodes at the end of form IM0008 and IM1344? does it mean that we missed something? or does it mean it is not valid even if we have validated it before printing the forms?

Did you press the button "Validate" on the form? Do you have a mac?

No foreign transaction fee? Exchange rate?

Which are you referring to? There's an exchange rate for both Paypal and wire transfers unless you have a US dollar bank account. The transaction fee for the wire transfer is what I'm referring to as being expensive. The only nice thing is my bank allows me to pick if I want to use their exchange rate or the exchange rate of the bank the wire is going to.

I had the same problem from my mac. The only solution I found was to use a PC to validate and print.

Maybe someone can correct me but I think it's not 100% necessary if you have sent it in already because there is an option for people to handwrite the applications and then this obviously won't be able to generate the barcodes from the data.

edit- I see you've already asked this question on another thread. hope you found a solution.

I had to use a PC in order to get the barcodes. It wouldn't generate for me when I used my mac.

I was just thinking about Paypal at the moment as well ! So if my husband was sending me his money through Paypal there would be no fees ?

My husband and I send each other money through PayPal and the person sending the money pays a small fee (compared to other forms of money transfer). I think the most we ever paid for a fee with PayPal was $5 CND

I have a question about my CIC. When we create an account do we create it as the sponsor or the applicant?

I did mine as the principle applicant and it works. Not sure about the other way around though.

We all get neurotic about our status!!!...try taking 22 months before getting the PR...I think its normal to check at least at the beginning of the day...at lunch ...at dinner and then before bed time!!!!

Apparently I missed the memo that if I use my wife's address, I have to use the representative form. Anything tricky on this form?

Also, I'm a little confused. I'm physically living at her address while on a temporary work permit. I don't quite get it, but I'm just gonna play along.

in my experience, there is no easy way to transfer money from US to Canada accounts. EVen with banks that say they have "cross border accounts", it's still an ordeal and costs a lot of money in fees. Paypal would not let me transfer money from bank accounts either. I think you need to have an account for a certain amount of time before they let you do US/CDN transfers between bank accounts. When I tried, it would only let me use a credit card. If you don't have a lot of money to transfer, then i'd recommend taking the cash out of the atm and just depositing it in the canada account, or writing yourself a check. Again, you are going to be paying exchange rate fees that can be big. I have a monthly us bill to pay, and what i have to do is get us money at the currency exchange then take it to TD, get a bank check and snail mail it. I have a TD borderless plan that is pretty useless, except for the fact i can get these bank drafts for free. if you happen to find a way that's easier, please share. it has been one of the most frustrating parts of settling.

anyone have experience renewing their US passport while in Canada by mail? i know i can go to the embassy, however the website suggests those in canada can also do it by mail. looking for insight from those who have done it. is it really as simple as sending it in the mail per usual?
