Preparing my first income tax return since our wedding last September. My spouse is a US citizen and resident. How do I tell CRA that she has no SIN, and I'll be claiming no deductions? Can't get answers on any phone lines or on website.

When my husband filed we called the CRA and explained that I didn't have one and they said to go ahead and leave it blank..

Update on ECAS tonight! I'm so excited!

Permanent Residence

1. We received your application for permanent residence on February 3, 2014.
2. We started processing your application on March 3, 2015.
3. Medical results have been received.
4. A decision has been made on your application. The office will contact you concerning this decision.

The only thing they were lacking was an accidental death insurance policy. We sent a copy into them and they said they didn't have it, but I have misplaced the original. I know it's here somewhere, but I don't think it's very important.

Are you talking about how long it took BeShoo? There were additional document requests and I think some extra Keystone cops shenanigans in this case. So one of the ones that makes up one of the worst case scenarios.

And congratulations BeShoo!

Please remember that all American citizens must file U.S. tax returns, no matter where they reside. So next year she will need to file a U.S. return next year for the 2015 tax year.
And no, this is not an April Fool's joke--so sorry! :(

right, cbsa could care less. you can drive it across as often as you need to. before going through the process, the only issue you need to be concerned about is whether your insurance company cares and/or how long of a grace period the province gives you when you are actually "living" in canada as a pr with a us vehicle (not insured, registered, plated in canada).

the entire process is actually easy. it's just a lot of steps to coordinate. for me, i had the most difficulty securing canadian insurance. otherwise, it was a lot less painful than anticipated.

Just a quick follow-up to this:

I managed to make it about 60 days before any trouble. And the trouble was from my insurance company/agent. They were only willing to cover me for 30 days in Canada, which I didn't know (my agent told me 6 months at first) - my insurance agent ultimately snitched on me, which is how my carrier found out about my 'visiting' Canada. I knew I was pushing the envelope as it was, so I'm not complaining. But when I got my cancellation, my carrier gave me until end of April. (Probably a state law about cancellation notices, timeframes, etc - which ended up giving me extra time in the end. I called to confirm that even though I'd been past my 30 days, they simply can't stop coverage abruptly like that regardless of where I am - and that I would be covered in Canada until my policy runs out.)

In that time, I crossed the border twice - once to get my mail and a second time to get my mail and then ex/import. No real hassles on either trips.

Tip that might save somebody a few $$. My NC license was set to expire in July, 2015. I renewed 6 months early (January) as allowed by law, and KEPT my previous license while waiting for my new one to arrive. Why? It has the date of issue on it (January 2006). It is a still-valid, state-issued document (a license is a document) proves I've been driving more than 2 years. Thus, it saves me from having to pay the NC DMV for a notarized/certified document showing my driving experience (double the price when you factor in my wife). Even though I/we have a shiny new licenses that has an issue date of 1/26/15 (and subsequently NOT two years of experience) our original licenses can still be used as proof of experience. I verified this in-person at a DriveTest facility in Ontario.
