i heard it takes 14-18 weeks for an fbi check...

my husband is us and i'm canadian, we sent in his background check 6 weeks ago and we recieved an envelope today. im unsure if there is a problem or not, or if we are even allowed to open the envelope.
is it possible it could be done in that short of time, and can we open it?!

Also i havent done my taxes in a few years, should we wait till i get those done, or just send in my pay stubs from the last year, and is there an amount of money that im supposed to make. thanks for any advice!!! :)

Yes, of course you can open it! :)

How else will you know what it says? :)

We had to get ours a few times, as my husband has lived and travelled all over the world, and they kept expirying by the time we'd get another one.

A few times for the FBI check they sent it back saying we hadn't supplied them with enough information (which was wrong, we really did, and they just didn't read it), but we did what they requested and faxed it back to the # they provided.

So it could be your actual Record Check, or it could be requesting further information.

The 14-18 weeks is just a guideline, can be quicker or longer....just like CIC....

Hi,
The CIC website says it can take up to 18 weeks but the average seems to be around 4-5 weeks. My wife got hers in about 4 weeks. So 6 weeks seems very likely. Unless you got something different than her, you can open the envelope and make sure the FBI certificate is in there (and hopefully it says that he is clear (no record) ). for the record, I sent in the actually letter, though some people have sent in the whole envelope. The thing CIC wants is the actual, original letter.

as for taxes... well unless you have a good reason for not filing, it may cause some issues. Because CIC will want some information on your finances like the Option C of your notice of assessment, which you only get by filing taxes. You're going to have to prove that you have the finances to support your husband. But if you haven't been reporting your earning to CRA, then this could get messy.

An NOA is not a requirement for the application. If you don't have one, you can provide other information to prove you have finances to help support your husband. Like a letter from your employer, bank account info, etc. If you feel you are still lacking in finances, I think you can get statements from relatives who promise to support you and so forth.

There are more people on this forum more experienced than myself about the financial requirements for sponsorship, I will defer to their wisdom.

FYI: That FBI certificate is good for 3 months from the date that is on it. You need to get your application in and received by CIC before those 3 months are up.

There is no income requirement to sponsor a spouse and you can't actually have a co-signer when sponsoring a spouse. You need to be able to show that you and your husband won't need to go on welfare. To show this, you can use proof of your income, your savings, his savings, of the inheritance to come, letters from your families offering financial support, a plan detailing how your husband will get a job once he is a PR etc. Many unemployed and low-income people have successfully sponsored their spouses.

Your husband (the applicant) needs medical and background checks. YOU (as the sponsor) do not.

if you are taking about the photos for proof of your relationship, I don't think there is any size requirements. We sent in 4x6 photos.

umm.....it says imm 3910 e

in the appendix document checklist.

is there a way to figure out exactly which forms i need, for an outland application (us husband) and my sponsor ones? i thought this one was it! most of what we've been doing is gathering all of our info, and now trying to attack the forms.

Yup, IMM3910 is all for your husband. IMM5491 is for you.

All the forms you need are here:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp

For part 3, pick the one for USA

You need all the forms in part 1 and 2, except the below which depends on your situation

For part 1:
-IMM5409 - only for common law. You are married so you don't need this
-IMM5476 -if you are submitting this application yourself (no lawyer) then you don't need this

For part 2:
-IMM5476 - if you are submitting this application yourself (no lawyer) then you don't need this
-IMM0008DEP - you only need this if you or your husband has other dependants (like kids) to list
