Hi all, I hope you can help with my issue:
I'm a US citizen. My boyfriend has received a work permit for a one-year position in Canada. (He is from a country that requires a visitor visa to Canada, even for tourism. I believe his visa is NOC Class A) We're planning to get married in Canada very soon and to live there during that one year when he'll be working in Canada. We have also rented an apartment there for a year - the lease is under both our names. I'm not looking to establish permanent residence in Canada, but I would like to get some sort of temporary non-tourist resident status in Canada after we get married. I'd like to be eligible for government sponsored health insurance and a work permit. Is this possible?
I know that you can extend your stay as a visitor past the 6 month limit, but I don't know if you can extend your stay *and* change your status from visitor to temporary resident/worker.
Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!
