Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen and have only ever had to fill out Canadian and Québec taxes. However, my wife (US citizen, Canadian PR) landed in August 2021. She worked in the US until she moved up to Canada. After landing, she started French classes and has been receving a scholarship from the Québec government so that she can attend the classes full time. We are wondering how to fill out her taxes. Would it be doable on our own or would we have to go through a CPA?

Thanks for your help.

I guess it's a question of whether you know how to report her scholarship $ for both her Canadian and U.S. taxes. For the U.S. taxes, she'd take a credit towards such taxes paid to Canada. There are some other matters, such as adjusting the Canadian personal exemption amount by the proportion of the tax year since landing as a PR in Canada.

Are there any tools we could use to help us fill out her taxes? Or would we have to go through CPA firms?

If it were me, I'd start with something like TurboTax as this doesn't sound like a situation that is too unique/complicated. But be prepared to defer to a CPA if it proves otherwise.
