Hi,

I’m Canadian and my father is holding a PR card. When he left for Hong Kong last year, he applied for his new PR card, and fast forward, in February 2024 it was issued but was sent to my address in Canada before he could return with his old PR card. His current old one expires in late August this month, he is flying to Canada on Tuesday, will he be able to enter with his old PR card that is not yet expired?

When he boards the flight in Hong Kong, they will see that his card hasn’t expired yet so he will be able to get onto his flight but my question is, when he arrives at Canadian customs, will he be able to present his old PR card along with a picture of his new one that I sent him and explain to officer and still pass through customs? I will be outside the airport waiting for him, will I be able to bring the card in and show the customs officer?

Please help. My father is very old and he was planning to come back before the new card was sent last year but he got into an accident and just recovered.

Should I even let him risk taking the flight if customs officer will deny him? Or is there a chance he can still enter given the new card is literally going to be outside the gate with me. And husband card has not expired yet technically.

He needs the PR card to get on the flight. Typically old card should be cancelled when you renew the new card to prevent fraud. Whether that happened is impossible to say. Impossible to say if he will be able to board the flight. Is he compliant with his RO? You should have sent him the new card.

It's a bit late but you could have sent the PR card to him before he boarded the flight.

It's in general the airline which check the PR card expiry/status. Not the customs officer.

Someone got lucky and was allowed to board the flight.... so it's hard to tell.
