Hello Community,

It's once more me.
I'm relocating to Vancouver in July together with my common-law partner (I'm canadian citizen).
After receiving an Email from the Canadian Embassy Paris in which they've told us the process time for family sponsoring (common-law partner) is about 60 - 90 days, we decided to relocate to vancouver together while the application is processed.
Now I have to read that the process time for Paris (Which would be the processing embassy for Switzerland) is about 9 Months  . They probably have told me the process time of Step 1, and never mentioned a Step 2 :(.
My question now is what can we do? After we've relocated to Vancouver in July and living in Canada, are there any possibilities to get the process done quicker? What if not? Is there anything we can do that she can stay longer then the 6 months in Canada?

Thank you very much.

I believe...from other posts I have read...that she can apply for an extension for the visa. She would have to do so about 30 days before it expires and also add the information regarding your application for PR.

I hope this helps and maybe someone with more experience can share more.

Best wishes!!

Currently step one at mississauga is taking 42 days.
The Paris Visa office says 9 months.... however, the London VO also says 9 months but most are processed in 2-4 months from when they receive the application. If the Paris VO is similar then what you were told 60-90 days could be correct.

Why don't you ask on this forum for other members who have been through the Paris office for their experiences.

The processing time varies a lot between cases. It is possible that your case will be done in 60-90 days. The 9 months if that is what it says on the website would be for 80% of cases but you don't know if your case will be in the slowest 20%. It might be in the fastest 20% for all you know.

The first stage for an outland is done in Mississauga and was taking about 6 weeks last time I checked. After that it goes to Paris. There is no way to get anything done faster, even if you are in Canada. You would have the option of applying inland but it is not really better because it takes even longer.

It is possible to stay longer than 6 months on a tourist visa. After 5 months, just send in an application to extend based on having applied for sponsorship. Include the file number. Your spouse will have implied status until you get an answer but people who have already applied for spousal sponsorhip and are waiting are almost always approved to extend their visitor status.

Ok, Thanks for the quick advice's. I'm a lot more comfortable now.

What about getting her allowed to work? Is there a chance to get a kind of a temporarly work visum without waiting months and months either for the permanent residant process or for the work visum?

She can check into a 1 year youth mobility visa if she qualifies, see http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/switzerland-suisse/youth_jeunes/index.aspx If she can get it, that is a 1 year open work permit. If she can't, she is like any other visitor wanting to work, she would need an employer to apply for a labour market opinion for her and if they get it, she could apply for a work permit.

See our time line. We applied through the Paris embassy and are from Switzerland. Ours went rather quickly. It depends on your personal situation, but if you have everything in order it can go very smoothly.

Hope that helps.
