Hi, I have oath ceremony comingup. I have an emergency situation to travel to India, so I am planning to take oath and apply for urgent passport processing. But the problem is I can't apply for Passport until I get Proof of citizenship certificate.
I wanted to ask, if anybody recently took oath and how long it took for you to get your citizenship certificate?
Thank you
R..
You can request the ceremony clerk to expedite the sending of citizenship certificate. They will send the citizenship certificate through an express courier (such as Purolator) and you'll receive the citizenship certificate quickly.
One of the applicants had done this because his/her school required the details of Canadian passport. The OP requested the clerk to send the citizenship certificate quickly and that request was granted.
If you go for urgent passport request, you will likely receive that within 2 business days.
So, assuming you receive your Citizenship certificate on the 3rd day after your oath and passport takes 2 days, then you will be able to obtain a Canadian passport in 5 days (5 business days or 7 days) after oath. This is an approximate timeframe.
You can travel to India with your Indian passport. AFAIK, you can still use the Indian passport up to 3 months after becoming a foreign citizen. The only caveat to this is you won't be able to fly back to Canada without a Canadian passport. You'll have to apply for Canadian passport in Canadian consulate in India (and for this, you'll have to carry your citizenship certificate).
So, if you have 7 - 8 days of time after oath to fly to India, you could think about taking this route. But remember, the urgent passport might not be issued in 2 days and if they don't, you'll need a backup plan.
