But be wary, you may not find consistency in the answers they give... it may differ from agent to agent.

Thanks for your straight forward answer.

Some document won't validate without surname. Is it fine to mention as "N/A" or "Not Applicable"

write your middle name in surname box....that's all you can do.....and that's the only right thing.....
Ask cic agent this thing directly......otherwise they may confuse you.....

Guys,

I dont think we should use LNU in Canada Immigration .LNU ( Last Name Unknown) acronym is used while filling up US immigration forms when you dont have surname...and they understand it. Infact, if you have single name, you use it as Last name ..and put FNU(First name unknown) acronym ..

For Canadian immigration, go ahead as suggested by Panna....VO and immigration officer understands ...this.

Hi Panna,

Another person(Andy2109) suggested to user "LNU" in family name, but he also mentioned that agents differ in their opinion. It may just that the agent in touch with you would have suggested to use middle name and that of Andy2109 would have suggested "LNU".

Let me try my luck and what version i get to hear from agent.

I just checked with two CIC agent and a lawyer.

One of the agent and lawyer mentioned that I can just put n/a in family name and add a covering letter explaining the reason.

Another agent mentioned that I add one of my 3 names as a family name and mention the discrepencies with the passport in a covering letter.

Considering that all my family member don't have family names, I am thinking of just adding "N/A" in family name section.

Makes sense. The answers from Call Centre Agents is never consistent.
You should go ahead putting N/A in the column.

As per the CIC site :

" If you do not have a family name on your passport or travel document, enter all your given name(s) here and leave the given name field blank.

Write all of your given name(s) (first, second, or more) exactly as it appears on your passport or travel document (even if the name is misspelled). Do not use initials."

Policy on Single Names in Passport

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) considers the surname (family name) as the primary identifier for an individual. In some cases, a single name will appear in the given name field of the applicant’s passport. In such cases, CIC will record that single name in the surname field.

In cases where a single name consists of more than one part (e.g., Jean-Paul), the entire name will be recorded in the surname field.

All future immigration documents, correspondence and applications should be completed by entering your complete name in the surname field and leaving the given name field blank.
