URGENT - Need help on maintaining PR status

Hi,

I have recently received the Passport stamped and the visa is valid until Sep 2013.We are planning to visit canada for a week or 2 to complete the PR formalities and then return to our home country due to some financial obligations.

I have some queries in this scenario on how to maintain the Pr status while living in your home country.

1) Usually when you receive the PR card whats is the expiry date / validity of PR card ?
2) How soon you need to re enter canada after the first visit to maintain the PR status.?
3) We are travelling in June 2013 for short visit and next visit will be mostly in Aug 2014 to settle permanently in Canada , will there be any issues in landing canada as there is a gap between first visit and second visit?

Appreciate an advice here as we are yet to make a decision on the permanent travel to canada.

Thanks in advance .............

1) Five years from the date of landing in Canada
2) You can stay outside Canada as long as you want if you have a Canadian spouse accompanying you or working for a Canadian employer. I heard some people in this forum return to Canada 3 months before the expiry date of their initial PR card.
3) No, just that you don't hand in your B4 in your first landing. Since you are staying only for a week or 2, so you won't be getting the initial PR card, unless you instruct them to have it forward to an address in Canada and have the card courier to you outside the country.

Thanks Steaky for that prompt response.

Could you please clarify this point. Here both me and my spouse ( is not a canadian ) are returning to our home country after 2 weeks of initial visit to canada. We will have our PR cards sent to us by our relatives in person. So how soon should we re enter Canada the second time to meet the PR status. The second time entry to cananda is for permanent settlement.

Thanks again Steaky.

To make this more specific - The first visit is planned on June 2013 , we ( me and my spouse ) come back and continue working in our home country
for another 2 more years to close our financial liabilities.

The second visit is planned on June 2015 for permanent settlement and we live for continuous 3 years. Is this safe to maintain the PR status and are there chances of facing any issues during landing and immigration since there is a gap of 2 yrs from the first landing.

I will be grateful if you can clarify to this point. Thanks is advance.

You should not have any problems doing that. You are allowed to be outside Canada up to 3 years in any 5. If you spend 2 yrs. outside after your landing, you still meet the residency obligation and wont have a problem.
