Hello everyone,
I need your help. I just got a full-time job offer from a Canadian institution. I got my Master's degree from a designated University in Canada last October and right away started my Ph.D. I am still PhD student on a study permit, but since I received this job offer, now I am considering to get a work permit. Am I eligible to apply for an open work permit? If yes, then what stream? Do I need to quit my Ph.D.? what if I take a one-year leave?
Thanks in advance for your priceless help.

Is the job offer from a company or is it an academic role with a university?

In that case your employer needs to obtain an approved LMIA in order for you to obtain a closed work permit.

Thank you very much for your response. How can I ask my employer to obtain an approved LMIA? Is that a common procedure that organizations are familiar with? they asked me to start working on the 15th of October. Is there enough time for that?

Also, if I get a job offer with the approved LMIA, Can I start working full-time upon submitting my work permit application or I should wait to untell I get the work permit?

You can't start working full time until you have an approved work permit. So no - you cannot start working upon submitting your work permit - that will be illegal.

Some employers are familiar with the LMIA process and some are not. You'll have to ask your employer if it's something they've done before.

No - you don't have enough time to complete the LMIA process and obtain a work permit by October 15th. The LMIA process alone typically takes several months. The employer has to start by advertising the job for at least four weeks according to the LMIA advertising requirements to prove no Canadian could be found for the job.

It's too late to get an open work permit (post graduate work permit) based on the education you completed last year. To get a post graduate work permit, you needed to apply within 90 days of finishing your Masters.

You can investigate if for some reason your job qualifies as LMIA exempt (based on the information you've provided so far it doesn't). If it is LMIA exempt, then you can apply for a work permit with just a job offer. However you still can't start working until the work permit is approved.

How can I know if the job qualifies for LMIA exemption?
