Hi all,

Just 2 days back I got the "ready for visa" email asking for mine, my spouse's and my dependent's passports along with photographs to be sent to VFS. The email says that passports should be valid for at least 6 months. My passport is going to expire in just under 7 months from now, so I can still use the current passport albeit with a narrow validity margin, however, at the tentative time of my travel, this passport's validity would be under 6 months and so I will have to renew my passport anyway, in order to travel. So my confusion is as under:

1) Should I renew my passport now on urgent basis and send the new one to VFS. If that's the case will it cause any problem since it will be different from the one I used in my application. If I need to take this route, do I need to inform IRCC? If so, how? Also, if I get my passport renewed should I submit both passports (old and new) to VFS and fill the table with my new passport that has been asked in the email?

2) If I go with the current passport and get the visa stamp on this one and later renew my passport, will it cause me any problem since the visa stamp would be on the cancelled passport.

3) Our medicals are going to expire in January next year, but since my passport is going to expire in October this year, if I use the current passport, my visa expiry would be till October. I am fine with this since I plan to go at the earliest possible anyway, however, I would like to bring my family at the end of the year. My question is, will their visa expiration dates be tied to mine or they'll have independent expiration dates based on their Medical exam expiration dates and their individual passport expiration dates?

What is the best option for me right now? I would really appreciate any suggestion or helpful advice. TIA

Best,
Lazy

Send you current passport with 7 months validity to avoid further complications/more processing. You will get COPR till the validity of your passport i.e Oct for all family members and not Jan.

Craig has answered most of your questions. for the last one, the validity of the copr is 1 yr form the date of medical or pp expiry whichever is earlier.

You can call your family any time later before the expiry of COPR. Your PP has nothing to do with their entry and is not tied in anyway.

Thank you @craig123 and @nishantvshah for your responses. I have asked around and have been suggested by some of them to actually renew passport before sending it to VFS for visa stamp. And that's why I am still undecided, need to figure out latest by this weekend. My passport is expiring in 6 months and 28 days from now, by the time I get it back with visa stamp it will have probably less than 6 months validity and I'll have to renew it anyway since I cannot travel on a passport with less than 6 months validity. I am just not sure, how to go about it in case I send in the new passport? Should I include the old one (that is on my record with the IRCC) as well with the passport submission material to be safe and include an LoE for the VO? And do I need to inform IRCC about this, if so, how? Or do as someone suggested that it doesn't matter you send the new one or the old one, it will have no effect on your application/process in getting CoPR.

I would certainly appreciate if someone with expertise in this matter or someone with a similar experience could chime in and share their views and opinions. TIA

if u want to renew and send your passport, you will first need to contact CIC and your visa office and tell them about this. normally u have 30 days to submit your pp. first thing is to get back to them and ask for an extension. rest is upto you what u plan.

Thank you @nishantvshah for the reply. I have gone ahead with an urgent passport renewal, which usually comes in a week. Hopefully, I won't be needing an extension. I have been suggested to inform IRCC about the passport renewal, by uploading the scan of the new passport through CSE, before submitting my passport to the VFS. Lets hope everything goes well.

Hi there, I wonder how you handled this situation finally? I'm in similar situation, my application has been approved but I haven't received PPR yet, and my passport is actually in renew process. Not sure what to do..

Sorry, I couldn't see your post earlier. So I should clarify one thing here real quick - the expiration date of the visa, you get after PPR, depends upon two things; the expiration date of your passport and the expiration date of your medical test, whichever expires first will dictate the expiration date of your visa. So, in case your passport expires before your medical, the visa expiration date will be that of your passport expiration date. And if the medical is expiring before your passport expires then the visa expiration date will be the date your medical expires.

Well, here is the deal, if you submit your new passport after PPR without first updating your application/profile with the new passport, your visa will be stamped into the new passport without any problem or issue whatsoever. However, the visa expiry/validity will be based on the expiration date of the old passport on record in your profile (in case it expires before your medical does). That actually happened to me, although I sent them the new passport, the visa I got was expiring the same day my old passport was expiring (Oct 2018) and not when my medical was expiring (Jan 2019). So, I would suggest you to immediately update your profile with the new passport through CSE, so that they have your new passport on record with them and when you send them your new passport for visa stamp after PPR they issue you your visa with an expiration date based on the expiry of your medical (which will be a later date) and not your old passport (which will be an earlier date).

If, however, your passport is expiring after the medical then you really don't need to be concerned and really don't need to update your application/profile with the new passport. Just send in the new passport when you get the PPR email and although not compulsory you may, if you want to, include the scan of the biographic data page (first page) of your old passport and a one page LoE explaining the reason, why you are sending the new passport instead of the old one on record in the application. I hope it helps you and clarifies the situation for you.

Lazy

Thank you Lazy! Actually my passport and medical expire almost the same time, medical a few days later than the old passport expiration. And I just sent out the passport and included a copy of the old passport. Hope that'll work. :)

I wonder how long did it take for you to get approved and get your passport back? Will it take longer if I don't update my profile with the new passport?

I've update my previous post, take a look. For me it only took 4 working days to get back my new passport with the visa stamped into it. The new passport has literally no effect/impact on the time/delay to get your visa stamped passport back, so relax!

Thanks! Just to make sure, you didn't raise CSE to upload the new passport before sending?

Perfect, you are good to go, and you don't need to be concerned at all then.
