Hi everybody, need your urgent help on the topic of a work permit (WP). I have a job offer in Alberta and we are getting my WP application in this week. The job is actually a transfer from it's American subsidiary. My american visa expires by end of January and I was hoping to make the transition to Canada right after. However, the WP processing times seem to 5 weeks. Is there anything I can do to get this expedited?

No, you can't expedite the application. Good Luck!

Hello,

You can receive your work permit at the border without going through the online process *if you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country*.

See: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/entry-requirements-country.html

Just bring all of your required documents and you will get processed, right then and there, for your work visa. You'll be issued a WP from a border agent after maybe an hour or so of reviewing your docs.

I came to Canada on a NAFTA work visa. I'm a U.S. citizen who flew in from Texas. When I landed and got off the plane, I went into customs at the Vancouver airport and waited while they verified my job offer, as well as reviewed whether I was qualified to take on the job or not. I needed to bring my degree, 3 letters of reference from former paid employers that said I knew what I was doing, and a few other papers given to me from the hiring company.

CIC website explaining how to obtain a work permit at the border:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=171&top=17

Also possibly helpful, since you mention this is a company transfer (Canadian company?):
http://www.canadianimmigration.net/work/lmia-exemptions/

To further this discussion you should reply to these questions:
Are you currenty living in Canada or do you live in the U.S.?
Are you being issued a NAFTA work visa or an LMIA?
Are you a U.S. citizen or are you from another country?

Cheers and good luck!
