I got acceptance letter from Concordia University Montreal Quebec.
My PhD admission enrollment date according to University offer is in January 2013 and Time Limit is December 31, 2018.

I applied for Quebec CAQ application yesterday. I also included photocopies of existing passport.

Now while I was preparing for Canada Student Visa realized that my passport will expire on 20/Nov/2015.

My PhD admission enrollment date according to University offer is in January 2013 and Time Limit is December 31, 2018.

According to Canada visa guidelines - The validity of a visa cannot go beyond the validity of the passport.

Would you suggest me to reissue my passport from Indian passport for 10 more years before applying to Student permit or should I apply with existing visa?

If you suggest for re-issue then what should I do with already submitted quebec CAQ passport copies, can I update the same? (reissue of passport will take approximately 5 to 30 days)

Otherwise if I get student visa until 20/Nov/2015, can I apply for student visa extension again?

1. Go with your existing passport. You are unlikely to get a study permit for 5 years anyway. When you extend your passport, then you can extend your study permit, if it is only issued to the expiry date of the passport.

Moreover, indian passport will be renewed only before a certain time period of expiry.please do know about it

Congratulations for admission. I also did not have a passport initially. But then I applied as soon as I got admission letter. The passport issuing procedure is now streamlined and you need to get an online appointment to even enter a passport office or PSK for getting a new passport or renewing. Passport agents can rarely help you now. So, the process of passport renewal is not a piece of cake and takes anywhere between 20 days to 60 days (unless you can really pull some strings with the RPO and get things done fast)

One thing is for sure that you won't get visa beyond 20 Nov 2015, but if you spend time in getting passport reissued right now, you might get late for applying for a Visa (which should be filed at least 1 month before the course starts - i.e. 1 Dec 2012 if your course starts on 1 Jan) So think carefully and wisely. Check thoroughly if you can get passport issued fast right now or can get it renewed later quickly. CAQ will take ~20 days. Prepare best-case-scenario and worst-case-scenario deadlines and weigh your options well.

For PhD, mostly the studies are for 4 years (maximum of 6 years) (as mentioned on my LOA) and the visa is issued for 5 years (as I have heard from a few friends)

Best of luck. Do update us about your choice :)

Hi There,

I see you are also going to Quebec for your PhD , I have also been offered admission for a Phd Program offered by HEC Montreal for the January 2013 intake.
Did you already get your Canada visa ? Could you tell me more about the process ?
I have just applied from my CAQ , looks am running late.
Would be good to know about your experiences

I have sent you a PM already. Don't worry much. Just prepare all the docs REALLY QUICK! :) If everything is fine in the application, you'll get the visa.

Here's what should do chronologically in my opinion :
1. Apply and wait for CAQ approval mail. Get medical done 1st thing tomorrow. Take an appointment ASAP.
2. Make sure you have sufficient funds to show as backup to scholarship (around 4-6 lacs in savings+Provident fund/term deposits in sponsor or your account)
3. Prepare financial docs -
2a. Go to bank, get letter from manager indicating amount in your/parent's (if sponsor is parent) account and term deposits.
2b. Get a bank statement of last 6 months of same account from bank (sealed and attested by bank)
2c. Photocopy the necessary docs (Marksheets, financial docs, property docs if any). Get them attested by notary
2d. A sheet showing details of availbale funds and funds required in a tabular format
2e. ITRs(last 2-3 years)/Form16 (at least an year) notary attested copies of sponsor.
4. Make an 'Application File' and start attaching these docs as mentioned in check-list. Use university checklist but you can attach additional docs as mentioned in general checklist too.
5. Get a Visa size photograph
6. Fill out the immigration forms and attach to Application File
7. Attach medical form given by medical examiner and CAQ to Aplication File when you get it
8. Submit file on same day at VFS by hand.

You will take around 1 days in bank stuff, 1 day for medical (if you get appointment quickly), 2 days for arranging other docs and 1 day to fill up forms and review whole docs. So if all goes well + you are smart :P, you can get complete file ready by Dec 2 or 3 at max. Best of luck!

Transcripts are not required. Detailed marksheets are required as per checklists. Also if any doc is original, why would anyone need it attested?
