You can stay as long as your WP is valid, once expired you are in implied status.

Is it possible for me to apply for a visitor's visa then apply for an open work permit?

Yes it is possible, it all depends on CIC on approval.

You can certainly apply to change your status to visitor.

On what basis do you believe you qualify for an open work permit?

You should apply for visitor status before your current WP expires.

Note visitor length shouldn't be too long and you need proof of enough funds and explanation about your visiting plans; check this forum for.more info.

As asked by Scylla, what are your reasons to apply for OWP, perhaps your spouse/partner is a skilled temporary worker or PR?
