Urgent advice needed - e-certificate or paper certificate?

After 22 months of waiting, my son finally received the letter for oath. However he needs to travel immediately after the oath for personally reasons - as he has a summer course overseas. I read the IRCC online information, that he can return to Canada with citizenship certificate. In that case, would the e-certificate serve the same purpose, or only paper certificate is recognized? E-certificate can be done within 3 work days, which seems to be faster.

Thank you.

e-certificate is available to all applicants who applied online or paper early on or after January 4, 2023. One can pick e-certificate or paper certificate as an option as a part of the application process. If the application was submitted before January 4, 2023 - one can only get e-certificate if you were randomly chosen for the e-certificate pilot. This selection e-mail comes as a part of the test invite. If one did not receive the invite or if they declined to participate, the only other choice is a regular paper certificate.

Also, unless you are a US dual citizen, the only way one can return to Canada on a commercial vessel (boat/ship), aircraft, or bus/train is with a valid Canadian Passport. In some special situations, if you have a passport from an eTA eligible country, you may be considered for a special authorisation (not guaranteed).

Thank you very much!

He can fly to the US (US F1 visa), and drive to the border. Would he be allowed to enter by road? Thank you

Yes, in a private vehicle such as a one way rental car or personal passenger car. You'll need to carry the other passport, Citizenship Certificate, Driving Licence
