Hey!

I have got accepted for MSc in Pharmacology at the University of Alberta for this Fall 2011. I will be receiving a departmental assistantship stipend of $21700 for my first year. I'll be applying for the visa very soon. And my father will be sponsoring me. But I have a few confusions that I'm listing below. Hope you guyz can help me out...

1. My tuition fees is about $8,000 a year. And along with living expense (with inflation) of $12,000/ year, it comes down to $20,000. So, will it be alright if I show this amount ($20000) as my financial support? Or I need to show additional amount?

2. Or do I need to show financial support for two whole years ($20000 x 2)...(in which case it'll be really really difficult!)

3. For how many days / months does this sum of money be stable at the account in the bank? Some people say 3 months some say four, I found a few others saying nothing like that is needed- all u need to show is that you have that amount in the account...that's it!

4. What type of financial support is accepted? For example - savings account, FD, etc - any preference?

5. Also does showing any fixed asset helps?

I know that's a long list of questions. But I'll be really grateful if anyone can throw some light at any of the points. :)

Congrats Mehnaz for getting the admission and getting that scholarship.

1. 1st of all, you don't have to worry about inflation. Can you please clarify me whether your scholarship is for two years or for one year only? Here is a breakdown of expense:
Tuition = 8,000/year
Living = 10,000/year
Other = depends on you (air fare + settling fee + etc)
So, per year, you will have to have a budget of around 20k. Now if you have the scholarship for 2 years (total 42.4k), then you will not have to show any extra money other than air fare + settling fee + etc (maybe like 5K/10K depends on you).

2. It is always wise to show two years expense or one year expense with a constant source of income (to proof that you will be able to sustain the education during the second year) of your sponsor (in case of sponsor, it has to be proved that the sponsor is providing your expense, he/she has enough money/income to sustain his/her family also) or renewable of your scholarship.

3. As far as I know, there is no maturity period. Then again, due to difference of banking conditions, it may vary from country to country so it is always better to consult an immigration officer in your country.

4. Savings account, FDR, bank balance - any sort of proof of holding money is accepted.

5. You should definitely show fixed asset because that proves your country tie (other forms of country ties include work experience, job leave, affiliation, etc)

I hope I am able to clear your questions. Don't hesitate to ask more. Forums are for posting long questions and getting answers :D

my bro rhasan said everything.......i am also adding some points

1. as your are receiving $21700 as stipend then showing fund of $20000 should be enough. but you have to show proper evidence of departmental assistantship stipend to CHC. but if you can show more funds then it will make your case strong.

2. when you show funds, you have to show the sum of (Tuition fees+ $10000 + air fare)
may be not $40000, but the more u show as funds the better because it will convince VO that we will not face any problem if uni cancels the stipend you already entitled for.

3. different countries have different checklists. it's mentioned in your checklist. for example: students from bangladesh have to show Bank statements for six months. but it doesn't mean that you have to maintain the fund for six months. for the safety,you should at least hold the funds for 3 months, i think VO checks the END balance(the balance you will show as funds), transactions, more importantly your financial position. because all Visa Officer know that people usually dont keep huge amount of money in their bank , they invest in opportunities for better return.

4. savings accounts, FDs are the commonly used as source of funds.for general category, they accept: everything as long as you can convert into cash easily or in limited time(may be 3-4 working days).

it is also recommended to show any additional supporting documents demonstrating a reliable source of funds (letter of undertaking and financial documents from parent or sponsor, official letter of scholarship or financial award, investments, income from rental properties etc.);

5. Fixed assets such as properties, long term investments etc will surely help your application. It will prove that you have home ties. and you will return from CANADA once you complete your studies for these. Also note that, having family in home country is also a way to show home tie. But these days, showing only family doesnt convince the VO about home tie. so i suggest you to show the fixed assets or anything that will help you to prove your Home tie(like rhasan said)

Thank you sooooo much for your responses! ;D

The departmental assistantship stipend is initially for the first 12 months amounting to $21700 in total. And it was mentioned in the letter that my supervisor and I are required to submit applications for financial support in order to secure it (ie. stipend) for the next years. I already have a $21,700 stipend from the university and I'll be able to show another $20,000 (tuition fees+living cost+airfares). So what do you think? Will this amount be sufficient provided that my sponsor (in this case my father) can prove that he can sustain my expenses abroad as well as his family here?

Yes as long as you can proof that your father can sustain your expense and his family, your application will not get rejected, at least not for insufficient funds. BTW from which country are you applying from?

That's actually very true...not many Bangladeshi students are in UofA. I completed my undergrad in Pharmacy from East West University. What about you? Which uni in Canada are you heading to?
Achchha, can you help me in another thing. By any chance can you provide me a checklist for the visa application? And how did you get your police clearance?

Wow you must have very high cgpa for getting chance from EWU! The university itself should be very proud. I did my undergrad from your neighboring university BRACU :p Going for MEng in Electrical Engineering in University of Calgary.

Sure I can provide you with the checklist. 1st tell me whether you got scholarship (if yes how much) and whether you have any sponsor and whether he/she is a business holder. Because those things are dependent on checklist. Plus recently, VFS have changed the checklist and there is no need for police clearance certificate. Then again, if you want to provide it, you can do it by paying 500tk to shonali bank through chalan patra, write an application, submit it to DB headquarter in mintu road along with photocopy of passport. For more details, you can refer to Dhaka Metropolitan Police website and go to one stop service link. You can download a pdf from there and everything is written over there. In any case, if you can't download (DMP website after all), you can provide me your email and I can forward it to you.

@ rhasan: I got a departmental assitantship stipend of worth $21700 and my father is going to sponsor me wholly. He is a retired government service holder. I saw a post recently on the "updated checklist by CHC, Dhaka". So all the points are covered there. right? And one thing, how important is this "student questionnaire"?

@ abrar2007: I've already downloaded the forms and working on them. Thanks anyway! :)

Is your scholarship for a year or it will be renewed for 2nd year also? Show your fund accordingly.

Can you please clear me on "all the points"? I mean what are your referring to? The list of documents? In case of list of documents, yes that's the updated checklist (they omitted police clearance certificate from that).

Student questionnaire + study plan = substitute for the interview and so it is important. In the questionnaire, answer to the point. If an answer is NO, just write NO. In field of IELTS, just write the overall and section scores. Answer preciously and don't elaborate that much (study plan is where you elaborate those matters).

My stipend is for the first 12 months of the program. And it was clearly mentioned in the Offer Letter that my supervisor and I have to look for funding in order to continue financial assistance for the next years of my study. So I planned that I would be showing my stipend + a little above $20k + land properties.

Lol! By " all the points" I meant all the possible forms of documents to be submitted for your visa application. We both got that right... :p

Do you have any sample (completed) student questionnaire and study plan? If you do, can you please mail them to me if it's not too much of a hassle? My email address is mehnazferdousi@hotmail.com.

And thank you once again for all the suggestions. We're in neighbouring universities in BD and hopefully will be in Canada! :D

Yah that should be good enough. Do the CA firm evaluation as soon as possible and prepare the affidavit.

And yah all the documents are noted in that checklist. But you can post your final documents checklist just to be sure (you never know; may miss something!)

Sent you the docs!

You are welcome. Well not neighboring universities in canada but in the same province :p
