Hello everyone

this is my first post here, I will try to make brief

So we were going to finish our 3 years period by the 22nd of June and had all our files ready to be sent, but we all know that the Bill C24 came into effect in June 11 (11 days before our eligibility to submit the citizenship application), so Just imagine the disappointment and sadness, but whatever.

Anyways, Now with new Liberal Government and the promises of changes for the Bill C24 and changes in the overall immigration laws, what will happen to our case? is the 3/4 years policy going to be restored ? as This is our main concern now, will we be able to apply for citizenship once the changes are put in place? I looked everywhere but no clear information. Also does anyone have any expectation on when the changes will happen?

Thanks and have a great day

It's highly unlikely that any changes will be made before you are eligible to apply in June 2016, if at all.

I think there are hundreds of thousands of people in the situation. There is no difference if you were one day,one week or one year from the date you apply on 3/4 role. I personally think that after landing you started the process of citizenship and this new role 4/6 will be applied midstream. There a problem here, they will apply on us another role 180 days out of 365 days. This will make problems it means you may actually needs 5 or even 6 years to be able to apply. Noone of us know that before to be able to arrange his travel trips. It is unfair not to calculate such days even for those who will land after 11th June 2015. Imagine you work for someone for 8 hours, and after 3 hours you had to leave to see your mother who was very I'll and transferred to the hospital. Is it fair if the work owner refused to pay you the 3 hours? It is the same here I think. We have to write petitions and contact our MPs concerning this unfair new law. We have to think and act in a positive way.

The citizenship process starts upon submitting the citizenship application.

It's sad and it's frustrating, but those are the rules of the game. I totally sympathize with you, my friend.

I personally don't think it is asking too much 4 out 6 years of residency or even the 180 out of 365 of the year. Actually, I think both rules make a lot of sense.

However, I do think it is VERY unfair to apply the new rules to already landed people, who planned all their lives around the old law. It's like changing the rules in mid-game.
What I think it would be fair is enforcing the new law only for people LANDED after the law enforcement date. Meaning, only people ARRIVING in Canada after June 21st 2015 should be affected by the new law.
That way everybody would have a fair warning.

I apologize for going straight to the point, but you're not unlucky at all. You should change your perspective, raise your head and consider yourself extremely lucky that you had the opportunity to immigrate to Canada and will soon have the right to apply for citizenship. Be proud.

Even if anything changes, nothing should happen in the next 1-2 years as that takes time, so you will have to wait an additional year. Before thinking you're out of luck, don't forget that they're processing applications much faster these days which means yours might take about a year or so once you submit it. To put it in perspective, some people that applied in 2011 and 2012 are still waiting for their decision after 3 or 4 years as applications submitted prior to the change took a lot longer than they do today. Who's unlucky now, right?

Yes, the point is you're extremely lucky and should view it this way. Don't let this put you down and soon enough you will be a citizen. Perhaps that will happen before some that applied 3-4 years ago, which is seen by most (myself included) as unfair.

Hi Surgi..

Consider your self as lucky... think about me, have applied well over required number

of days end up with resident questionnaire spend so much money and now almost

4 years am waiting for my oath... visit MP office several times, meet with the

Lawyer several times and get their opinion, wrote so many letter to my local office

contacted many times Minister of immigration and to date waiting for oath letter.

In your case waiting time will be less hopefully and you will be citizen within

6-8 months after your application.. hope your can now relax and thanks God.

Thank you for the advice. I am relax and never considered myself as unlucky person. That does not mean that I should not express myself and opinion. I believe that I have to work hard to realize what I believe and want.

Submitting an application for citizenship granting is one of the final steps in the citizenship process. The very first step is landing in Canada and acquiring a permanent resident status.

At the risk of playing the devil's advocate here, I have to inform you being a PR technically does not entitle anyone to citizenship. Sure it's a requirement to be a PR in Canada for certain number of years before one can apply for citizenship, but that doesn't mean PR's have a right to citizenship. It's this "privilege" thing, you know.

I think in some countries around the world, their PR's have no direct route to citizenship... And in Canada, they can change the residency requirements pretty much at will, w/o much repercussion from legislature point of view. They just changed it from 3 out 4 years to 4 out of 6. If they wanna change it again to something like 5 out of 8, there's no law to stop them from doing so! Only the worry to lose votes would make the ruling party think about it... And you should know how most Canadians think about immigrants :p

That's only in your dreams. There are plenty of PR who never apply for citizenship. Specially citizenz from first world countries like USA, Germany, UK, etc.

According to your illogical sense, your province can't change the driver license requirements because when you applied for permanent residence you had planned to get a driver license ....... your driver license application starts only when you apply for it.

Most of you guys are UNGRATEFUL to our dear nation. Immigration and citizenship is a privilege and not a right. You all have the right to go back to your countries if you think you are unlucky in Canada. Can anyone try all these comments and petitions in the USD or any of the Asian countries? We do not want anyone who would not appreciate our country in this land.
