Hi,

I am currently a final year student of BE (Industrial Electronics) at IIEE Karachi. I will be applying at different universities in Canada for 2014 session for MS (EE) (Research Based) preferably in the field of Control System. As the competition in research based courses is pretty tough I want you guys opinion in which universities should I apply, where I might get accepted and have a chance on funding. My educational profile is as follows:

Matric - 88%
Intermediate - 81%
BE - 87% (First Position Holder)

Hope you guys help me.....

Its quite a simple process. First look at all the universities faculties database and look at professors those are involved with control systems and have done exclusive research and work in that field. There are many branches in control system (linear , non linear ,adaptive etc) and if you like a specific branch then look for professors who are working in that branch. Make a list. Next ,start sending mails to professors along with resume. And for your gpa there is no limit (even though gpa is quite important for masc degree but if you have strong research focus and have worked and done research in your field then cgpa wont matter very much) in the universities you look . If you get a positive reply , just apply there. And try to build a good relationship with your professor.

Hope this helps

Engineering programs are best taught in UToronto, Waterloo and UBritish Columbia but gaining admission in the U15 universities (research intensive canadian universities) is already an accomplishment. The U15 Uni's are:
UToronto, UBC, UAlberta, McGill, UWestern Ontario, UManitoba, USaskatchewan, UCalgary, ULaval, UMontreal, Dalhousie, Waterloo, McMaster, UOttawa and Queens. Good luck on your university hunting!

Actually I wanted to know among all these universities where do i have most chance of getting accepted, according to my profile. Because obviously I can't apply to all these universities. I will be applying to 3-4 universities, so I should probably apply whose standard is good enough and I stand a chance there.

Admission to thesis based programs doesn't work like that, as in you cannot just pick out universities and apply. You should contact professors, see whether they have research groups related to your interests and then decide where to apply.

That's what I told him in the beginning and I told him to consider all universities and approach professors in his field. But he s asking the same thing

I agree with @Arun_kumar. The advantage of masc is you will come to know early whether ou are getting a offer or not through professors. Good luck

Ok so I was taking it the wrong way. One more thing, If i want to take admission in fall 2014 session should i start writing to supervisors now or should wait until September October. As right now applications for winter session are being taken.

September October is a good time that's when I started contacting as well. Don't write too much to them, just get information on whether they are taking students. If they are write why you are interested in their research. Remember they need to keep you in mind when they admissions offers are sent out. Too early they might forget, too late they won't care.
