Hi all,

I've been a permanent resident in Canada for over a year and have a full-time job. I'm expecting and as my work only provides an unpaid maternity leave, I'm wondering about the employment insurance (while on leave). I was sponsored by my common-law partner and he signed an undertaking:

"All sponsors are required to sign an undertaking to provide the sponsored person with the basic requirements from the day they enter Canada until the term of the undertaking terminates. The undertaking is a contract between the sponsor(s) and CIC that the sponsor will repay the government for any social assistance payments made to the sponsored person... from the date in which they become a permanent resident for the period of three years."

Does anyone know if this includes employment insurance?
Thanks!

After reading more older posts it seems it's "common knowledge" that EI isn't considered social assistance. Does anyone know a reference to this eg. at the CIC website?

This isn't going to be referenced on the IRCC website, as it is nothing to do with immigration. EI is an insurance scheme that you paid into. It is not welfare.

1, It isn't a social assistance, as it is an insurance scheme, which you pay into while you are employed, and claim benefits, when you are unemployed.
