Nope, you have to work and pay into EI before you are eligible see: http://www1.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/menu/eihome.shtml

oh please, we have seen enough of those people here in the UK. We work hard, we pay taxes, and they claim it in benefits so conveniently easily. Thats just unfair on those have self-respect and who are physically and mentally prepared to EARN their own living. Then come the benefit cheats who rip off the treasury by deceiving the benefit system - and then as a result we have to pay more taxes. And I'm sure one of the prime reasons many want to move out of the UK is that they cant stand this unfairness.

It doesn't matter where you go, you will always find people like that. As long as there is a safety net, there will always be people who abuse it.

Leon,Canada owes me nothing, and it doesn't have to. But whose land was taken and killed, funny enough this is happening today. The bottom line is a the first settlers came and killed -progrom,the owners of the land.
How about in the UK? Kids kill their parents to claim insurance.

What does any of this have to do with your wish to claim benefits as soon as you have landed? Or are you saying we should all be greedy and claim as much benefits as possible for ourselves? Do you think society would still work if nobody works and pays taxes and everybody wants to live on benefits?

A coworker of mine, woman from Iran put it nicely when she had neighbours who made fun of her for going to work when they did not. She said somebody has to work to pay for your benefits. Think of that. Little old Iranian woman going to work at 6 am every morning to pay for you to sit at home.

Well everyone is drifting away from the question. To be entitled to Uemployment benefit, one has first to work and contribute towards the
national/employment insurance.

You can claim if you meet the following coditions.

You can apply for EI benefits if you have paid into the EI account and you are unemployed.

You can receive regular benefits if you lost your job through no fault of your own, for example, due to shortage of work, seasonal or mass lay-offs.

# You can receive compassionate care benefits if you have to be away from work temporarily to provide care or support to a family member who is gravely ill with a significant risk of death.

# You can receive fishing benefits if you are a person engaged in fishing

# You can also receive maternity, parental and/or sickness benefits if pregnant, caring for a newborn or adopted child or sick.

However donot expect any benefits until you have worked and contributed. Many people understand they can apply for this benefit soon after landing in Canada.Thats a wrong conception.

Yep, cos you painted me as if it's a big deal. somebody can't ask a simple question? You hijacked the forum as if you are the one running it.
If you don't get it, if people were killed and surreptitiously claim their land I see no reason why somebody can't ask how unemployment benefits work in Canada. If you have a problem with that it's business period.

Re:Unemployment benefits in Canada.

I'm sorry but as a Canadian taxpayer, I am entirely not excited to have people immigrate here whose first question about the country is how soon they can get unemployment.
