To keep permanent resident status, a permanent resident must live in Canada for at least two years in a five-year period.

There are several ways you could lose your permanent resident status:

•A permanent resident who does not meet their residency obligations could lose permanent resident status.
•If convicted of a serious crime, a permanent resident may be deported from Canada.
When you become a Canadian citizen, you are no longer a permanent resident.

khanwaja,
Each individual case is evaluated independently except when you apply for immigration. They will be granted citizenship provided they pass the test and take the oath and has nothing to do with the principal applicant.

The 5 years will start counting from the date of your first landing

Your child and wife will get citizenship but you will not. Each case is treated differently afterwards but yes your files be together but processing will be separate after you and your family get the PR

Once you complete the Landing then you become a PR of Canada and they start counting the days. Your PR Card is valid for 5 years and you have to stay in total of 2 years (Can be in breaks) to maintain PR status.

1 - Maximum delay 3 years from date of first landing otherwise you will not be able to meet the 2 year requirement within the first 5 years.

2 - I'm not 100% sure about visa expiry for first landing, but I think it is either 6 months or 1 year from date of medical - (senior members will confirm)
