Not clear which documents are needed for my Proof of Citiizenship application.
The Document Checklist says to send certain documents "if applicable" without explaining what that means.
I want to avoid being told that I should have submitted some document that I didn't think was applicable.
My mother was born in Canada and lived there until she was about 25, when she moved to the US and became a US citizen. I was born in the US in the year 1945. I think I am a "Canadian citizen by descent."
According to the Document Checklist, the required identity documents include "marriage/divorce certificate if applicable." What is "applicable" in this context? I am a now-single man, married 40 years ago, divorced 20 years ago. Must I send my old marriage certificate and/or divorce certificate? Or is this a required document only for women who may have changed their name due to marriage and/or divorce? The checklist says nothing about this.
In the Document Checklist "Scenario 4" (born outside Canada before Jan-1-1947 to a parent who was born in Canada), certain "citizenship/naturalization certificates" are required "if applicable". What is "applicable" in this context? Must I send my mother's US naturalization certificate from when she move to the US, or is it only Canadian certificates that are required? My mother was Canadian-born.
I realize that "common sense" suggests that none of the documents I am asking about should be needed. But common sense is not always the best guide when dealing with government offices whose information requirements are only dimly understood by ordinary people.
