Hi folks,

I stupidly overstayed by 22 days as a visitor to the US some 12 years ago, was banned for 10 years (yikes!), and would like to visit family in Canada this summer.

Will this be a problem and if so is there any way to resolve it?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the hopeful message!

Does this mean that my US infraction won't show up on the Canadian screens when I arrive because it's erased after my 10 year ban or can I expect a series of awkward questions and the possibility of refusal? I do still have to apply for a US visa if I want to travel there again, if that helps.

I wish I could answer this question for you, but I think you should check out the CIC website (link cic.gc.ca) or call up CIC. However I think you would incur some very awkward questions due to this ban.

Hmm, awkward questions, one of my least favourite things! Oh well, I'll enquire further and hope that it can happen. Thanks.

Canada has nothing to do with your previous violation of US law, There is 10 year ban to go Us if you overstayed for more than 1 year. US and Canada are 2 different countries with different laws. They don't have mechanism to track your past immigration history of US. you have your privacy and thats your right normally US doesn't give it to anybody until you are not criminal and US doesn't count immigration offenders as criminals you can travel without visa to Canada, You will get visa on arrival in Canada if you hold UK Passport.

Hi nepal123, thanks for that, and sorry for responding so late! My family in Canada know someone who works for immigration and their story bears out your information so I'm good to go.

Odd that I overstayed only 22 days and got a ten year ban, it's not like I was doing anything other than enjoying myself and spending money. Oh well, America's loss! :)

Looking forward to my trip and the 4393049630486029029 photos I'll be taking, heh.
