Hi everyone

I am a UK citizen being sponsored by my Canadian partner. We are living in the UK right now. My question is, do I need to get a police record for the UK or does the immigration office in London do those checks themselves?

Thanks!

You need to get it and submit it as part of the sponsorship application.

The criminal record check for the UK is fairly hassle free.

Be sure not to apply for the subject access request, but the acro check.

http://www.acro.police.uk/police_certificates.aspx

There is even a high priority option (at a greater cost) which will ensure the certificate is issued with 48 hours of receiving the application.

I was a little worried about the police check (I currently live in Korea with my Canadian wife) but they were very helpful and issued it immediately.

If you have anything else you need to clarify, feel free to send me a message any time.

Good luck.

Often the standard processing is issued in less than a week so unless it's crucial don't bother with the premium.

Also make sure to include an extra fiver or whatever it is and get a 2nd copy of the certificate. Never know when it might come in handy.

also make sure the police check is done within 3 months of sending in your application.... we made that mistake and had the police check for about 5 months then realized the CIC doesn't accept them older than 3 months and had to have them re-done! not as easy to do from canada, so heads up :-)

And the ACRO people were extremely helpful and efficient in addressing our concerns.
