Hi All,

I got a query regarding the UK Nationality - Basically, I applied for my Canadian Immigration in 2006 Aug, that time I was a HSMP Holder in the UK and now my status has changed to Permanent Residence (PR) in the UK and my son was born in the UK so he's eligible to get his British Passport.

Do you think if I apply a British Passport for my son will be a problem for my Canadian application? My current status on Canadian Immigration - Just submitted Medical and RPRF.

Any input will be appreciated.

Why would it be a problem? Is it not a legal status?

You should apply and get his passport ASAP and inform the CIC.

BobbyB,

Of course it is a legal status, but I'm just worrying about dual citizenship etc..When he was born we were under HSMP on Sri Lankan passport and we applied him a Sri Lankan citizenship and a passport. Since we got the Permanent Residence in the UK he's eligible for British Passport.

What will happen in the end by carrying 3 Nationalities - UK, Sri Lanka, and Canada. I presumed that one only can have dual citizenship. And also what the Canadian Immigration going to think?????? Shall wait for Canadian Visa first or Shall I apply for British Passport and cancel the Sri Lankan one.

Advises please???

Why are you putting yourself into unnecessary dilemma. What he is going to get from the CIC is Permanent residency and not Nationality/Citizenship at this point in time. Britain allows/accepts dual Nationality, so if you want the Permanent residency stamp on the Sri Lankan PP then you may as well wait, if otherwise then go for it. Normally, No Nation allows 3 Nationalities unless you have very strong reasons and grounds. (Business, Political etc etc).

In any case, it's up to you. Your child is British by birth anyway.

Advises please???

BobbyB,

It's really difficult for me to make a decission - unless someone telling me the ideal one (I mean the worth one).

What is your opinion? others opinions on the forum also welcome!!

I don't know about your ties to Sri Lankan, so I cannot decide for you. Anyway, if I were you I would have taken the British and when I am "ripe" to take the Canadian I would have given up the Srilankan.

Don't worry about it. Apply for your sons passport. Canada doesn't care how many citizenships he has. Even when your son can apply for the Canadian one, I don't think he will have to give one up. If there is a law in Canada that says you can not have more than 2 citizenships, let me know because I don't know of one. There might be such a law in Sri Lanka or the UK, in that case, he might have to give one up.

Leon,
Well, the issue will not be with Canada, but with other countries.
Please let me know where it is written/stated that Canada does not care about how many Nationalities you have. As I am going to run into this situation hopefully, in the near future.

Don't assume things are forbidden unless they are allowed. Assume that things are allowed unless they are forbidden :)

A person may have several citizenships at the same time. For example, a person who was born in a country other than Canada, who applies for citizenship and is naturalized in Canada, and then naturalized in a third country may be a citizen of all three countries.

Since the OP is only applying for Canada PR, they don't care if he has two passports or not. I have two passports and I told Canada about it. Having two passports doesn't diminish my wish to live there.

It is passport country's business. Countries like India doesn't allow dual citizenship. SL allows it if you pay some money (not bribe money lol).

However the OP might be breaking SL's law by doing this. I have some SL friends with dual passports and they say SL has no idea about it so they get away with it. I am by no means suggesting that the OP should break the law.

I agree with this. The reason why you left your original country is that it doesn't provide for you what Canada or UK can. So it is always better to hold those passports. I am talking in simplistic terms here.

BobbyB, Leon, and Rupeshhari Thanks for your advises and comments, atleast I know what to go for.

I'm sure some people must be on this forum with the same sitautuion.

More advises welcome!!
