UK Carpenter looking for Canadian recognition of Trade Skills

Hi all

I am looking for the governing body that is recognised for trade skills such as Carpentry? Over here in the UK the governing bodys are NVQ's and City & Guilds, but after searching the internet I am struggling to find Canaidans equivalent. Can someone please help me?

I went to the Expo in Manchester over the weekend and was speaking to an immigration agency regarding applying for a visa and she told me that it would be better to have your skills recognised, so that potential employers in Canada can see that I would I meet there requirements in Carpentry.

Also, could someone point me in the right direction as to where I could find a list or lists of construction companies with address's etc please?

Hi Walshy: woodworking isn't my field, but I did a google of "red seal carpentry" and came up with an interesting site, Industry Training Authority in BC. If this doesn't give you what you require, you might try emailing and asking them your question as I am sure they would be able to point you in the right direction. I have heard of the "red seal carpentry" too but I am not pretty sure what kind services do they offer. It would be better if directly contact them..

Carpentry is actually a voluntary certification in Canada which means you can work as a carpenter based on your experience without having passed any exam.

If you were already living in Canada you would talk to the apprenticeship board where you live first and see if you can challenge the exam. Apprentices would first pass the provincial exams and then take the red seal exam a few days later. Most take the red seal because it means they are certified to work in any province. Since you are not in Canada yet, you should start talking to red seal and see what they say.
