Hi all

I'm a UK accountant (CA qualification). I have been qualified for less than one year but have 4 year's accounting experience with a large international accounting firm. I'm hoping to move to Canada in the near future but at present I am short of the points required for EE so will require an offer of employment to stand a chance of being offered PR.

I have fully researched into the logistics of working as a CA in Canada. For Alberta and Ontario (and probably most if not all other provinces) I can automatically register as a CA due to a reciprocal qualification recognition between the Canadian accounting bodies and the accounting body that I am registered with in the UK. This is great news and theoretically there is nothing stopping me working in Canada.

However, I have made a few applications so far and have had no responses. The main problem I foresee is that my experience is obviously with UK laws and taxes. I am willing to study to bring my knowledge up to scratch if supported and I am also flexible as to my particular role and willing to consider other areas however I see no incentive for a Canadian employer to consider me for a role given that I will have little, if any, more experience in canadian accounting and tax regulations than a new start and given the fact that there would be additional steps requried by the canadian firm to employ me.

Has anyone had the experience of moving to Canada to become an accountant (or work in finance)? I'm obviously going to keep looking and applying for jobs that I think would be suitable for me, but if I'm fighting against a brick wall then perhaps I may need to reconsider my options :(

Any advice?

Thanks

If you are applying for jobs with an employer you are not likely to get anywhere without a visa in hand. You your be looking at immigrating as a skilled worker - see the CIC website
You have to understand the process a company must go through to get work permit for you is very intensive. and unless you are the greatest accountant alive or there is suddenly a massive lack of accountants - this is unlikely to happen. Hate to burst your bubble :(. If you are under 30 you can apply for a working holiday visa through international experience canada, that the only other option.

Thanks tishness

You're not bursting my bubble...I'm fully aware of how difficult it is going to be. I'm going to keep applying though.

As far as I can tell, my only option is to apply as a skilled worker through EE? I'm submitting my application through that also but with a predicted points total of around 440 without a job offer, it is unlikely that I'll be offered PR anytime soon :(
