U.S. citizen living part-time & full-time in Canada

I’m a retired U.S. citizen and my wife is a Canadian citizen. After we married, I got PR in 2009, but I kept my house in the U.S., my U.S. car, etc. , and we started living on both sides of the border…a week at her house, then a week at mine. (I never lost PR, because I had sufficient days in Canada, plus when outside Canada I was with my Canadian wife.) At the end of 2011, I sold my house and started living full time in Canada. So, it wasn’t until January 2012 when I signed up for OHIP, got an Ontario driver’s license, etc. Now, I thought I would apply for citizenship (probably in early 2015, so I don’t have to account for 2010) and I wish I could ignore 2011 also, since I will have sufficient time from 2012-2014 alone. However, since I can’t, I guess I will list the U.S. address (for 2011) and write “part-time” next to it, then our Canadian address covering the same time period and up to the present. I sent for both my CBSA and CBP reports, so just comparing the two shows that I have sufficient days. (I haven’t travelled outside the U.S. & Canada.) If I get an RQ, I will have a difficult time coming up with anything Canadian in my name before 2012. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Your CBSA and US customs reports on your border crossing activities might help support your stay here. If you're worried about RQ so much, (I am guessing you didnt apply yet) I would suggest you offset those times that you weren't able to provide strong proof of your residency by waiting it out and it would get rolled off.
If you have already applied, its only a toss up. The silver lining is if you're from GTA area, RQ and any process after that are all processed pretty quick most likely than not that is typically shorter than the regular processing time for applicants from the prairies and the west.

Thanks for the reply! I don't want to wait and run into the new rules. I have enough time, if they would just compare the CBSA & CBP reports. They prove I was in Canada enough days. I'm not in the GTA, I'm in Windsor, where trips across the border are quite common. My Canadian residence and former U.S. residence are only about 1 hour driving time apart.

Don't be surprise if you get a RQ request when you submitted your citizenship application. If I'm not mistaken, frequent trips to US can be a RQ trigger. Just be prepared for it. If you don't get RQ request, all the better for you.

As the poster above me said, CIC might try throwing the book at you. Sorry to break that news for you. But here are 2 observations that are favorable towards applicants like us:

1. Ontario (from where you're) is the fastest in processing regardless of you're from GTA or not. 1 year case closing times even with RQs are not uncommon.

2. If you're gonna apply now, and you have setup your expectations fairly for a year or so to obtain a Canadian passport with give or take 3 months, even if CIC throws the book at you it is highly likely the liberals are gonna come to power more or less the same time next year. They dont play mostly these bureaucracy nonsense, particularly when dealing with diversified demographics. with a new boss CIC will have to follow a better work ethics and finally would get disciplined which is way long overdue!
