U-Haul to Canada

I was wondering if any one knew if we can have a Permanent Resident take our U-Haul across the border for us?

My husband and I have applied for PR and just waiting for approval, but thinking of moving couple months early as visitors while we wait for the PR to go through. We will have a small U-Haul that we know we can't take across the border, but we have a cousin that is a PR in canada, can he meet us and drive it across for us? Has anyone tried this?

Won't work. Regardless of whether you or he drive the items into Canada, CBSA will charge tax/duty on everything. You have to wait until your are actually PRs before you will be able to import your personal items without duty/tax.

What if we are ok with paying the tax? how much is it/how is it calculated?

On their website it says: "No duty is payable on goods imported for personal use, if it is marked as "made in Canada, the USA, or Mexico", or if there is no marking or labelling indicating that it was made somewhere other than Canada, the USA, or Mexico."

You won't be importing for personal use. You aren't legally allowed to move to Canada and so can't import your belongings yet for personal use (you can. Your cousin cannot import them tax/duty free on your behalf since he won't have included these items on his list of belongings when he immigrated (because they aren't his). Short answer is that you don't qualify for the import exemption and will be paying tax/duty. Duty can range from 0% to 35% depending on the item. There may be sales tax on top of that. Ok Thank you. Do you know how much stuff we can take in our car with us, if we decide no U-Haul? We have a SUV that will be empty, can we take "6 months" worth of stuff, that might include baby items like a swing, etc. Is there a tax on that too?

You are crossing the border as visitors so you should not take anything that implies you might be trying to live in the country even if you have a PR application pending. Taking stuff that visitors normally have would be fine such as baby stuff but adding in for example houshold stuff not so good. Also by a 'swing' you mean a full size frame swing as that might need some explanation from a visitor if so.

Dangerous to bring a car full of stuff as a visitor. If it looks like you're moving to Canada - you could be refused entry to Canada. Time to time we even see people end up with one year exclusion orders. Bring what you would bring as a visitor (2-3 weeks worth of stuff). Leave the rest in storage until you have PR and are actually allowed to move there.

I guess as first time permanent resident you can carry stuff without tax, if its not new. But we are not sure about renting a car from us and returning it in Canada, as we will be driving from Miami to Toronto. Is it possible to to rent a =car from us? Has anyone done this before as we have household stuff and interested in renting a suv.

Yes, you can rent a car. You can declare and bring items with you (I think you should've owned them for at least six months, but there might be inclusions).

Miami to Toronto is quite far - it is possible that flights would work out cheaper and lesser hassle (maybe local flight to Buffalo/Albany and then rent a car) - unless you have lots of goods you need to bring from Miami. Even with goods its often cheaper to sell and re-buy unless you are within short driving distance.

Thanks for the reply. Actually we have lots of clothes and one bed too. We can not sell clothes and shoes. They are next to my heart lol. Yeah, this will be a long drive, could be fun too but not sure yet. Just want to collect information. Thanks for the reply.
