Two passports(one renewal) overlap in time

Hi,

Question 14 about passports and travel documents:

Can two passports overlap in time? I mean first passport was cancelled when I renewed for a new passport, however the "expiry date" on the old one still extends to an overlap with the new one, but it was canceled before that date anyway.

Should I put the cancellation date of the old one? or the actual "expiry date" printed on the old one?

Cancellation date. The other one is not valid to its expiry date.

I had the exact situation, and I used the dates on the passports (not the cancellation dates) as I have a cancelled stamp without a date. I think it is obvious to the officers that the old one will be cancelled (you have to take it with you to the test interview anyway so they can check it is cancelled).

Also do you guys list PR card and/or NEXUS card in this travel document section?

Did you show the overlap in validity of passports as a gap and provided an explanation ?

or a separate Letter of explanation or nothing at all, except for mentioning the issue and expiry dates.

@samhere I had the same question today and I called CIC call center. They suggested to add a piece of paper explaining why they overlap just for a piece of mind. But it should be obvious that only the most recent one is valid

It's obvious that once a passport is issued the old one is voided

Hi Everyone,
Need help. I have the same situation where in my old passport expiry date is mentioned as October 4, 2017 and new passport issue date is Jan 27, 2017. Due to this I'm unable to enter my old passport details in EE entry profile. Could someone help me to resolve this issue?

Yes they can. I had old passport from Ukraine and new biometric passport. I had overlap because i did not want old one expire. Both passports were valid at that time. I could have used either one of them when travelling. Got PR with no problems, got AOR on my citizenship application. So it is allowed
