i met a wonderful guy august of last year. he was walking through my area and seemed down. we struck up a conversation and he told me he was visiting toronto. after that we hung out everyday till he had to leave. we kept talking online through facebook and 3 months later he came back to toronto and lived with me for 8 days. it was amazing. and we've continued our relationship over the phone and online till now. we really want to be together and i plan on visiting him in america this week. we want to get married one day and live together in canada. he plans on visiting me in canada again for 6 months next year. my question is what avenue is best to take for this? hes a diesel technician which is apparently a high in demand job here. i want to sponsor him to come here but im currently on ontario works assistance for many years but plan to be off and work a regular job by the time he comes to stay here with me for 6 months. please any information would be really greatful.

You can't really do much for him unless you marry or live together for a whole year, in order to be considered as common law. Then you can sponsor him if you are not on welfare.

He can visit Canada but not work or study, unless he formally applies for a work/study permit.

The IRCC website is a mine of useful information. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship.html

Thanks for answering my question. How do i get him to stay with me in canada for an entire year? I heard that ur only allowed to stay 6 months within the year and that an extension MAY be granted on a case by case basis? Wouldnt he have better luck applying as a skilled worker?

The normal method is applying for an extension as a visitor. Applying for a work permit is non-trivial bearing in mind that it would be a closed work permit, almost certainly requiring an LMIA. If he's capable of immigrating via Express Entry in his own right, that would be a good alternative.

What is lmia? Is it possible for us to do both? Me sponsoring him as well as him applying via express entry?

When applying for 6 month extension. What should i say for the most likely outcome for approval? We were planning for when he first stays here for 6 months for him to say hes simply visiting his girlfriend. Wat should he say when applying for another 6 month extension?
