I’m an international student who’s gonna study at a university in Ontario for next 4 years.

I’m currently trying to extend my temporary resident visa as it’s going to expire in August 30. Right now I’m a little bit confused about what I should apply for.

I already have a study permit and a temporary visitor visa (the one they put on your passport)

As of current on the Canada,ca website I’m applying using the IMM 5257 form so I’m assuming I’m applying to get a new temporary visa

Should I be applying for a visitor record? Or am I ok?

1. I assume your study permit is still valid, so you are a visitor with permission to study, you don't need a visitor record.
2. So you only need to apply for a new TRV. You can apply in Canada. Are you sure your TRV is expiring in August? Seems odd that for a new student you would get such a short validity date on the TRV in your passport.

You have to apply for the study permit extension. It is on the IRCC webiste under studies. You will require the offer letter of your program stating how long your course of study is. You will receive a study permit once approved and then you can apply for a TRV on the basis of that study permit to get a stamp on your passport

The process is similar to the process you did before when applying for study permit. Please let me know if you have more questions

Yeah, my TRV was issued on the 21st of August 2018, and it'll expire on the 31st of August 2019, which is the main reason why I'm applying to either renew it or get a new one.

Thanks!

So I won't be able to use the current study permit that I currently have?

The study permit you have right now is expiring soon. So to stay in canada for the rest of the time you are studing you have to apply for an extension

That makes sense, I've just sent out an application to renew my study permit, do you know how long it usually takes for one to receive their new study permit? I sent mine electronically.
It should take around a month as I had applied on the 10 May and received the approval on 13 June

It may take a month or so. Wait till you r study permit arrives. Now, after you receive study permit- you can reside as long as the study permit expires. However, if you want to travel out of canada within that time frame- you will require a stamp on your passport

For that purpose you will have to apply for a TRV which costs $100 and it is online as well.
