Hello there,

I am an Indian citizen,25, living in New Zealand for the past two years. I am on a student visa atm which is expiring in 6 months. I have the summer break for 30 days in December and want to visit my sister in Edmonton. She is a permanent resident of Canada. I am not financially stable right now. Is it a valid option to get a financial sponsorship from my parents in India( both of them currently hold TRV) and use their bank statements as the proof of funds. Please help!

IMO, there are a number of factors that might work against your TRV approval:
1. You have a temporary immigration status in NZ

2. Your student visa will expire in 6 months (in fact, in three months when you intend to travel).

3. Your financial situation is not good + your parents are in India = You may not have direct access to their finances

Other points:
1. Have you traveled to other visa-required countries such as the US, UK and EU?

2. Do you have to return to NZ for your exams?

3. Are you eligible for a work permit after completing your study program?

4. Do you have a rent contract/lease in NZ?

Thank you for your response. :))

1. No, I have not traveled to any other country except New Zealand.

2. Actually, my course finish date is 2nd of Aug 2019, I will be able to extend my visa for 5 months easily. After I finish the course I may be entitled to a 3-year open work visa. The 3-year work visa is not a sure thing but it will be clarified after the 28th of November.

3. I am flatting at the moment but do not have any lease of rent contract in New Zealand. I do own a vehicle in New Zealand and insurance as well. Does it have any significance?

The timelines don't make sense. You mentioned your student visa expires in 6 months (March approx, right?). But your course finishes in August 2019 + you can extend your visa by another 5 months.

1. When exactly do you have to give your exams?
2. When do you officially complete your course?
3. Also, how would you know if you're eligible for a work permit by November 28 when your course finishes next year (as per your post)

1. I have five terms in my course. There are no specific exams, I have to submit assignments.

2. The official course completion date is 2nd Aug 2019. I paid the fee for 3 terms so got 8 months of visa. Once I clear these terms, i will pay the fee for rest and apply for the visa again.

3. I have already availed my post-study work visa of one year after completing my one year study in 2017. Right now I am studying again in a different stream, the INZ has made major changes in post-study work visa policy on 8th of aug which will be effective from 28nov.

IMO, there's no clarity about your study/work situation vis-à-vis your student visa or your work permit. Both situations are subject to prior conditions which have not been met yet or else depend on NZ government decisions.

This along with the fact that you do not have a strong visa profile does not make it a strong case for a TRV approval:
No other travel history + no lease/no campus accommodation + no finances/finances are in your parents' India bank accounts + your parents have already been approved for TRVs (chances that the entire family from India/NZ may stay for a long length of time, not necessarily overstay the visit).

IMO, it could be a better idea to apply when you are issued a new work permit by NZ and you start working/can prove you have finances to pay for your visit/employment reasons to return to NZ
