Yes, you can request the visa office to return the passports without withdrawing the applications.

You must email the relevant visa office stating that you need the passports for travel to another country/any other reason.... and that you will return the passports when IRCC requests for them

Not sure Eastwest, sorry. Mine's an online app so we didn't have to send the passports.
May be seniors can advise you on it .

Would you guys have any idea if it is common-as in these delays for such cases or do you know anyone who has been through it.

And apparently it's only Canada which does this to defence/police personnel from India , not even US or U.K. And they have also apologised formally for it in the past. But they are back at it again.

I was following this thread for a while.

My father in law is a ex-servicemen.

We applied for his TRV on 15th feb, submitted app package in chennai office. His Visa got approved on 22nd feb.

We all are quite suprised with an early approval. We were of the imp that his visa is gng to be denied. Looks like its upto the case officer who is processing the app.

A faster approval for defense services personnel is likely, if the TRV applicant:
1. Retired from the defense services many years ago

2. Quit the defense services and then took up civilian employment

3. Was not holding an operations-type role. For example, if s/he worked in administrative departments

4. Was not posted in border areas (non-family type postings).... did not work in high-security areas..... did not handle highly-sensitive information.... did not serve during a war

5. If s/he was not working at a senior rank in the defense services/ judiciary/ police, etc

6. If s/he has a very strong travel history

In order to get passport back without withdrawing application, should we send email to embassy or send physical letter? Can we send letter directly or via VFS?

We applied on August 23rd, yet no response.

You must send a CSE + an email to the visa office.

You must not send a letter directly to the visa office or through VFS
