The VO looks at the application and says, Is this person well established at home so they will not be a threat to overstay in Canada? You prove that by having a good job, property, bank balance, history of travel for pleasure and a spouse and children. All these things would be a strong pull to return home. Sure you can send the invitation letter stating all room and board will be provided by you (include your CRA statement, bank statement, property assessment to show you have the required resources to make the invitation), but if you more or less indicate you will pay for the entire trip, it will make the VO wonder why this person can't support herself? The discussion about how much money to have in the account-the VO will consider holiday expenses as well as needing money to support herself upon her return. So to say you only need to show $2000, while that may be enough to cover her extras, will not leave anything for food and rent on her return. 7 years ago our friend showed $3,300 in one of his accounts for a 10 day trip. Again we said we would cover room and board but not entertainment expenses while here. Lack of funds was one of the refusal reasons noted. He had other accounts, fixed deposits and property but we had no idea it was necessary to include that for a 10 day visit visa. WRONG!!! Oh so WRONG.

This is a good point but other factors are taken into account as well. We have invited several friends / family to Canada. They had NOTHING but their job and a bank account with less than 1000 CAD (no properties, no assets, no travel history outside our own country). We solved this showing our permits and bank accounts in Canada. They were not under 18 and they didn't even speak English. A threat? Maybe, but the VISA was given for 10 years.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying showing as much proof as possible is better and makes a strong case, but what if you don't have all this? You simply don't travel? Evidence shows otherwise.

I know there is not a "definitive answer" so I think all experiences should be read.

So in Jalex's case, even his guests had no cash, he countered it by showing his own bank account and assets, as the host. It's best if both the host and guests have money. Although I have to admit I think he got a bit lucky for guests who dont' have much assets, travel history, but still be approved.
