Hi there!

I received approval for a TRV which is valid until August 2017 which would put me over 6 months in Canada. online says you can apply for open work visa if you have temporary resident for more than 6 months, does this mean I could apply for an open work visa am I understanding this correctly?

Unfortunately your understanding is incorrect.

You would only qualify for an open work permit if you were a TRP holder. TRVs and TRPs are two completely different things. TRPs are special permits that are issued to individuals who are inadmissible to Canada (typically due to a crime).

You have a TRV (not a TRP) and don't qualify for an open work permit.

If you wish to work, you'll need to secure a full time job offer from an employer in Canada. Your employer will then need to obtain an approved LMIA. Then you'll be able to apply for a closed work permit tied to that specific employer.

You can apply for work permit if you get a job here (with LIMO approved - long process unless you are highly skilled). I will advise that you go to their website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/apply-who-eligible.asp

Scylla is right!! You may not be able to apply from within Canada!!!

thank you for your response. the TRV is confusing me because it states temporary resident and is valid for more than 6 months which states can apply but that is for the TRP which I've now read so that is not me
