Please advise-- I plan enter Canada by personal car using my U.S. Greencard, because my Canadian PR card is expiring in Aug. So to avoid to be flagged at the port due to lack of residency obligation, i have to using my U.S. Green Card. After enter, if i stay for two years then apply for the PR renewal, is this possible? My concern is that if i don't use Canadian PR card to enter, would that be a problem when i renew the card? Thanks.

I don't know if you would get in any trouble for entering without disclosing that you are PR but the rules state that if you have stayed in Canada for 2 years, you are allowed to renew your card even if you had not met the residency requirements before that.

Hello,
I have a relevant question.
My situation is the following:
I am a Canadian Resident since 2007, and I have resided in Canada for over 2 years (around 770 days) by now. My PR card expired and I have recently submitted my application to renew my old PR card.
Waiting to receive a new one, but it has not been received yet.
I will have to make a trip to Europe in two weeks. (I am employed by a German company in Canada and I will have to go to Germany). This will be a business trip for max. 4-5 days.
My understanding is that in case my new PR card does not arrive by the date of my departure to Germany, I will have to ask for a travel document at the Canadian Embassy in Germany allowing me to return to Canada.
I am wondering how long it may take to receive a travel document from a Canadian Embassy abroad? Is it the same day service?

In case anyone knows, I would appreciate if you can share.
Thank you

If you are visa exempt to Canada, you do not need a travel document. The travel document is just for the airline to allow a PR who is not visa exempt to board the plane. If you are visa exempt, you can board the plane on your passport alone. When you get to Canada, you then deal with immigration about being a PR without a PR card. You should bring your landing documents with you, tell them that you do meet the residency requirements and have applied to renew your PR card but didn't get it yet.

If you are not visa exempt or you really want to have a travel document, you will have to ask the embassy in Berlin how long they take. I have heard travel document processing times ranging from 1 day up to 6 weeks depending on the embassy.

Question: What is the diff between getting a Travel Document and a Returning Resident Visa ?

Should someone with an expired PR who is overseas on travel only apply for a TD to come back in? (ie. if they are from a country that is not visa exempt)

US Immigration has the Returning Resident Visa which is basically the same as the Canadian PR travel document.

A travel document is for a PR who is not visa exempt to be able to travel back to Canada if they have an expired PR card or have lost their PR card.

Thank you very much for your reply, Leon.
Unfortunately, I am not visa exempt to Canada. I need a travel document to board the plane.
I have contacted the Embassy in Berlin. Waiting for the reply...
