Hi, I want to visit a town in USA for personal reasons, visiting someone. I live very close to US border and the town is under 70 Kms from me( if this is relevant). I am recently landed PR and have yet to get the PR card. Is it viable for me to go visit the American town? We have buses running between the 2 towns. Do I need some paper work or visa?

What is your nationality ? Whether you can travel to US visa free depends on your nationality not Canadian PR.

Unfortunately, US green card holder can visit Canada visa free, but not vice versa.

Indian. I assume I cannot do it visa free.
If you will know, do I have to take a regular tourist visa or some pass is issued at the border or similar? I will appreciate further information.

Unfortunately, you have to apply the B1/B2 visa from local US Consulate. Check their website first to prepare all the documents and make your interview appointment. In my opinion, US visa is the single most difficult visa to apply.

Applying for a US visa is just one half of the equation: if you have not yet received your PR card then you may need a PRTD to be able to return to Canada
