HI - Hoping someone can help. I recently landed as a PR (inland applicant) and need to travel home in August. Im from a visa exempt country. Will I have problems getting back into Canada if I dont have the physical PR card?

Due to implied status and then covid Ive been unable to leave Canada for over a year. So it getting very frustrating not been able to get back to see my family. I read about PRTD document but I think that also takes ages to process. It just seems so pointless. When I arrive back in Canada surely the officer can easily lookup that I am a permanent resident?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide!

You can certainly leave Canada.

However you need either the valid PR card or a valid PRTD to be able to board the plane to fly back to Canada. You won't be allowed on the plane by the airline without one of these things.

The only alternative would be to fly to the U.S. and then re-enter Canada through a land border. Right now you would need to quarantine in the U.S. for 14 days before entering Canada.

They would need to stay in the US for 14 days but not all states have a mandatory quarantine. It is still best to self isolate but they probably wouldn't be on full house arrest with check ups like when they enter Canada.

Thank for the replies guys! Could I travel back under my current temporary work permit. It's still in date and there is no mention in the pr letter about it been cancelled.

Sorry just venting and having a bit of a rant but they should at least temporarily give some flexibility given the current situation and delays in processing pr apps.
