Travel to US with visa but haven't received my physical work permit

Hi folks,

I am planning to go to US. I have a visa to US so there is no concern.
When I come back to Canada, it's written that if US is the only place I have visited, I can come back with just the work permit. However, my work permit just got approved today and I don't expect it to be mailed prior to my trip. Is it possible just to tell the port of entry officer that my work permit is already approved? Has anybody had the same situation before?

if you are from a visa-required country you cannot use your approved work permit as your traveling document in returning to Canada, you need to get a Visitor's visa, as the name implies it is a work permit and not a traveling document so you have to apply for a visitors visa and received the approval before you travel else you can go but you cannot return to Canada.
