I didn't realize it when I booked my tickets but it turns out my PR is card is expiring on the day that I am flying back to Canada. I have applied for a renewal but I most likely will not get it in time for my trip.

Would I have any issues if I arrived back in Canada the day my PR card is expiring? Or should I travel back the previous day.

You won't have any problems arriving on the day your card expires, but if you run into some sort of issue that prohibits travel and you go beyond your card expiry date, THAT would pose you a few issues.

Such troubles could be weather, air travel, sickness and or life in general throwing a curve ball into your plan.

Yes, you can do that.
