Travel from Canada to USA as a Canadian PR - how to reset visa waiver clock.

Hi,

I am a German citizen with Canadian Permanent residency. Germany passports are on the USA visa waiver programme.

I will be living in Vancouver and be travelling regularly to see my parents in the USA. I understand that the visa waiver programme is 90 days in the USA. I also think that they don't always 'reset' the visa waiver counter when you leave to go to Canada.

How do I go to Seattle from Vancouver on a regular basis without having problems with the USA entry VWP. Will getting a USA B2 visitors visa help at all?

Thanks,

Stephen

Most people here are good at giving advice on Canada imigration but i think your questions are about US imigration. Try looking for a forum to do with USA imigration and ask your questions there. They could be more helpful.

As of the last couple of years, there is greater information sharing between the CBP (US) and CBSA (Canada) where when you cross back into Canada from the US at a land border, that information is shared with the US (and vice versa). As such they will have a record of when you left the US, and if you are making frequent (short) visits, they should have the full record. However, you can also request that the CBSA stamp your passport when you return to Canada on each entry, so that on your return to the US they can tell that you did not overstay your visa. That shouldn't be necessary anymore, but if you're concerned it won't hurt.

If you wish to travel to the United States for more than 90 days, you can always apply for a US visit visa ( Not ESTA) which will grant you a visit of around 6 months.

If you travel by road from US to Canada, US Border agency usually doesn't know that you have left US.

This is not true - as of mid-2013, the US and Canada share exits with each other for non-citizens.
