Translation affidavit

Hi,

My wife and I are completing our paperwork for spousal sponsorship application outside of Canada. One particular requirement, however, is seemingly a showstopper.

Specifically, CIC requires an affidavit from the translator. Here in Thailand we've asked numerous translation agencies and they flat out refuse to do this ("we can only stamp it").

I've called CIC support line and had a conversation with an agent, and she said if the translators are unwilling to make an affidavit, then we should go to "some ministry that is responsible for this" and make them verify that the translation is made from the correct original document, the translation is correct and the translator is in fact certified.

If that doesn't work, she said, just include an explanation why this wasn't possible. (I suspect that this will not help with processing time, though).

So, my question is... did anybody have any similar issues (especially in Thailand, but short of this -- anywhere where a similar resistance was met)? How did you overcome this?

Thank you!

As Thailand is not a signatory to the Hague Convention on Legalization of Foreign Public Documents, in some cases, parties who have engaged notarial services in Thailand may need to have the notarized document authenticated or legalized further at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, or at the Embassy of the country to which the document is to be presented.

My wife is from Thailand too. We had the marriage certificate, registration of marriage and her birth certificate translated at the Ministry of foreign affairs and had no problems. IRCC accepted it.
By the way i also recommend that you do the translation there too. It will make it easier for you in case there is a translation error.
