translating documents

Hello everybody,

I live in the Netherlands. (boyfriend in Canada will sponsor me). I'm pretty buzy now with getting the whole application together.

Most of my documents are in Dutch, like diploma's, some proof of relationship etc, so I understand that they have to be translated. Now I was wondering if anybody knows if there's somebody (a notary or somebody) in Montreal Canada, who can translate my documents from Dutch into English.

I'm going to Montreal Canada the end of this month, for a month, and then we are going to send the apllication. So it would give me more time to get all the documents together if there's somebody in Montreal who can do that. If I have to get all the documents translated here in the Netherlands I don't have a lot of time anymore to get them together and get them translated.

I don't know about a translator in Montreal, but you could also consider online translation - I had to get some documents translated from Swedish to english and found a translator online on this professional website www.proz.com. They list a few translators for dutch to english.

it was very quick, and very efficient, and relatively easy. And then - you can start already now, and ask it to be sent to the address you want later on. For most of our documents, the translator only needed a scan of our documents (rent contract, etc) and the translator sent us back a stamped version, bound together, and we included that directly in our application. Prices were very reasonable as well. The translator we found on the website was registered as a professional translator both in Canada and in Sweden, and she was very easy to deal with.

Others may be able to answer for Montreal, but I thought I would mention that to you anyway, as it can save quite a lot of time, and once you sent the documents via internet, you don't need to worry anymore about it.

When I searched the internet, an ad came up for a Dutch woman who is doing translations in Montreal also. Since she's local, you may want to consider her (or someone else in the Nederlandse Vereniging Montreal) since you don't need a certified translator (you just need a non-family member who is willing to make an affidavit to translate the docs:


"Translation of documents

Any document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by:

the English or French translation; and
an affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
a certified copy of the original document.

Note: An affidavit is a document on which the translator has sworn, in the presence of a commissioner authorized to administer oaths in the country in which the translator is living, that the contents of their translation are a true translation and representation of the contents of the original document. Translators who are certified members in good standing of one of the provincial or territorial organizations of translators and interpreters of Canada do not need to supply an affidavit.

Important information. Translations by family members are not acceptable. "
