Transitting through London Gatwick

Hey!

My husband has officially got his visa (YAY), just waiting for it to arrive through post. He will have to transit through London Gatwick airport (he will need transit visa to do this). I am just wondering if anyone else's spouse has transited through Gatwick, staying a night in London, and had any issues? I really don't want to spend the money for me to meet him in London for one day, but I also don't want for him to run into any issues in receiving help getting around, and filling our boarding cards with limited English. The way the times between flights from his country - Canada works he would have to spend at least one night in London, probably a hotel within the airport or nearby. With Gatwicks new renovations, self check kiosks ect I myself find it confusing. I am just curious as to what others think.

Although this doesn't really have to do with sponsorship, I thought maybe someone would have a suggestion.

There is a new (and well priced) Yotel at Gatwick so he wouldn't need to leave the airport, or the Hilton which will both reduce the risk of issues/train delays or getting stuck in traffic.
We stayed at the Hilton the night before our flight and it was nice, although without kids I probably would have opted for the Yotel because of the price difference

I'm pretty sure that there are flight options that avoid spending the night in a city, even though that might entail a higher price.
