I am planning to apply for permanent residence through the Express Entry system and have a question about the trade occupations category under category-based selection. I am currently working toward building my work experience and want to ensure I understand the requirements correctly.
I have reviewed the information on category-based selection at Express Entry rounds of invitations: Category-based selection - Canada.ca. However, I am unsure whether the trade occupations category is exclusive to the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) or if I can also qualify for it while applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) with a different primary occupation.
Here’s my situation:
  • I have 6 months of work experience as an electrician in Canada.
  • I also have 2 years of work experience as a research assistant in abroad, which I believe qualifies as my primary occupation due to the longer duration.
I understand that the FSWP requires at least one year of full-time work experience in a skilled occupation. Since I have 2 years as a research assistant, I assume I could qualify under the FSWP with that as my primary occupation. However, I’d like to know if my 6 months of experience as an electrician would make me eligible for selection under the trade occupations category, even though my primary occupation is research assistant.
In other words:
  • Can I apply through the FSWP with research assistant as my primary occupation and still be considered for the trade occupations category based on my electrician experience?
  • Or does the trade occupations category require that my primary occupation be a trade, such as electrician?
