1. What is the difference between a Visitor Visa and a Temporary Resident Visa.

This quote is from the CIC website:
Implied status
If your visitor visa expires after you have submitted your application for an extension of your authorization to remain in Canada, you will be considered in status as a temporary resident (visitor) until a decision is made on the application. This is known as implied status.

2. Is it difficult to get an extension on a visitor (or temporary resident visa). I see there is an application online.
Are these applications normally and routinely approved unless there is strong reason not to? Or, is it the case
that these applications are approved infrequently?

1. They are the same thing. A person from a non visa-exempt country needs a TRV to be able to enter Canada.

2. It depends on the circumstances of why you are requesting the extension and whether you can show proof of funds to support your extended stay.
