To maintain Permanent residency status / for renewal, one needs to spend 730 days in total five years of residency period in order to ensure renewal. For passport / citizenship, law needs immigrant to stay 1095 days out of last four years.

There is no change in the law

Hi! I think you are confusing renewal of Permanent Residency with Citizenship.

To renew a Permanent Residency - you must have resided for at least 730 days (2 years) in the previous 5 years.

To apply for Citizenship (and get a Canadian passport) - you must have resided in Canada as a Permanent Resident for at least 1095 days (3 years) in the previous 4 years.

But just to clarify, after 1095 days in Canada you don't get a Canadian passport or citizenship automatically - you just qualify to apply for Canadian citizenship. If there are no complications with your file, it will take approximately a year to a year and a half for your citizenship application to be processed. Once your application has been processed and you have taken the citizenship oath, you can then apply for a Canadian passport.
