The most important thing that matter to me is how long does it take me to/from work i.e. how conjested the roads are. And my research suggest that Calgary will be quite a good choice if I want to spend less time on roads and more with family. Toronto has just grown bigger out of order since everybody and their dog wants to live in that city of Canada which has put a lot of strain on its infrastructure. And I'm sure you know that theres no Sales tax in Alberta so that surely saves you some loonies. Property prices are also lower and healthcare is a lot better (means provide quick access to doctor) than some major cities of Canada including Toronto.

PS. The problem with this forum is that its over populated with people who lack the very basic ability of understanding a post/question but still try to come up with responses out of their ***es. Can you see above that an OP is tryina compare the cities and people have started telling him about the university rankings? LOL

Friends, thanx for all the nice inputs on univ scene. The point is well taken & understood.
Tonsils/H... Gratis ! That's what I'm trying to figure out.

Brothers,

How abt the overall view of Calgary vs. Toronto? Is Calgary Ok enough for settlement, if one is not looking for a job?
-City infrastructure / amenities wise,
-Housing costs wise,
-Weather wise: how good/bad it is compared to Edmonton, Toronto...
-Schooling: below univ level wise,
-Socio-Cultural equality/containment wise,
-Ease of family settling down: good local communities around, family entertainment wise,
-Taxes, earning potential, social security wise,
-etc. etc.

Is it Ok in comparision to Toronto? Or should one stick to Toronto only as a initial landing point & settling down.

Regards.

Wait a minute.. .what are we talking about over here...

The 2 cities are very different... I've live in both of them, so try reading this.

before deciding on the city... one must decide what is his area of expertise. You are leaving everything behind and going to a new place only to land in Toronto if you were an expert in EPS projects or linked with oil industry, you definitely would be a fool.

Likewise, if you are from Finance background, you'll be waiting tables in Calgary.

So, you must see what is it that you can do best and then analyse what each city offers... then, take your call... of course, there will always be variables like friend in a city, uncle in a city. So, you have to weigh all of that as well.

As far as kids education is concerned, send them to the college they deserve best.. don't hold them back so that they are close to you... You made everyone in your family move to follow your dreams and take your chances. So, let your kids get in a school they deserve and want the most and make your decision work for you.

This is my opinion. but, it's still your call... All the Best...

Ohh! I think, I've to keep placing my OP in between, lest ppl forget the core issue:

TORONTO OR CALGARY : Which is better ?

Dear all,

I know it is not the right comparision. No two cities can really be compared, each has its own flavour & charm. And if Toronto has to be compared, it might better be with Vancouver or Montreal.

But that has been dealt many times over. Now, I need some sincere advice/s from you seniors, without bashing me up. If after enough deliberations, it finally trickles down to a choise between these 2 cities -Toronto or Calgary, which would be better for a new settler?

Presumptions: The settler has No Job Constraints & would be Self-Employed.
Comparision includes: Housing costs, Weather, Education, Socio-Cultural equality/containment, Ease of family settlement etc.

An overall subjective assessment is also welcome.

Regards.

Tonsils Hockey, You very rightly and boldly said - "The problem with this forum is that its over populated with people who lack the very basic ability of understanding a post/question but still try to come up with responses out of their ***es"

But still I wonder why they people haven't started abusing you. I had the same experience previously and I had to change my id and stopped asking or commenting which may inspire people to jump in.

We know qorax is a knowledgeable person & soon the people who haven't read any of his previous posts will start advising him in such a way that he will be repenting to start this thread!

Thanx vmp... it would be great to know what was your previous ID ! <Pun intended.
You are nice to point that out... yes, it is www and thus, outbursts would be natural. And on www can we really avoid WWF, that would be expected, no? But yes again, a little constraint shall make this a whole better place.

Viz Calgary, aren't anyone on this forum in Alberta yet? Leon is from Edmonton, I am still expecting his valuable, wholesome & awe inspiring overview on the matter.

vmpvmp - You just proved Tonsil Hockey's view about people.... There is nothing in your post that is of value to the OP's question.

Qorax - My cousin lives in Calgary. He loves it there.

-City infrastructure / amenities wise - Calgary proves everything you need.
-Housing costs wise - cheaper than Toronto.
-Weather wise: how good/bad it is compared to Edmonton, Toronto... - Pretty bad compared to Toronto but people do manage to live there. It takes a while to get used to it.
-Schooling: below univ level wise - He doesn't know.
-Socio-Cultural equality/containment wise - Toronto is a lot more diverse but Calgary is a big city and diversity is there.
-Ease of family settling down: good local communities around, family entertainment wise - He is single so he hasn't thought about family entertainment. Friends in Toronto tell me about the large and vibrant Gujarati community.
-Taxes, earning potential, social security wise - depends on the job. Oil and Gas jobs used to be paid high. A bit of an economic downturn at the moment. Toronto is more diversified economy.
-etc. etc.

Sanjeevindia - I will ask my friends in Toronto and get back to you.

Dear Usman,
Except for Quebec, u can mention & land anywhere in Canada as an FSW. More clearer... mention any city & land in another city too, no hassles.
Regards.

CanadaVisa4me... Thanx...
Dear Cv4me,

That was wonderfull. Made a lot of sense. The 'Gujarati thing' was splendid, which suggests that community get together, functions, family outings etc. are obviously happenning all around. This is a solace.

Thank you, my friend.

Any & every city is OK. It all depends where ur job takes u. A good job, even in colder locs like Edmonton means better than a non-descript one at Toronto. No offence on the non-descript thing, it actually boils down to what u want.

Said that, for starters Toronto is a good choise due to ease of finding survival / transition jobs, 'coz of its sheer size of commerce. And for a starter Vancouver might be avoided due to just the opposite of Toronto. But once u settle down and bag a likeable job anywhere, don't get stuck to the landing city and move on.

Brother,

At the cost of zeopardising my quest for my own query on this thread, let me give u a short descript on Mississauga;
It is:
-Sharjah, to Dubai
-Dofar, to Muscat
-Jerash, to Amman
-Noida, to N.Delhi
-Panchkula, to Chandigarh
Etc...

Meaning: Mississauga is a 'satellite town/city' to Toronto. 14 kms apart, is taken as the GTA and can be just called Toronto Suburbs. There, practically, is no diff w.r.t. Toronto. It is as good as being IN Toronto. -Well organised, Newer Developments, Well Connected et all...

Hope that helps.
Ps: Where's the answer to my original query? Friends ???
